ON THE FRONT LINES
Military Veterans at The Art Students League of New York
OPENING RECEPTION APR 2 2016 6 PM - 8 PM

This exhibition is an examination of veterans' artistic impact on The Art Students League of New York and the development of post World War II American art. With benefits from the G.I. Bill of Rights, many veterans returning from active duty received tuition credit and a monthly stipend for living expenses, which made it possible for them to attend The Art Students League of New York to learn and experiment with their artistic practices.

On the Front Lines was organized by Jillian Russo, curator of the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery at The Art Students League of New York. This revised presentation is organized by Robert Scalise, Assistant Director for Exhibitions and Collections at the UB Art Galleries in collaboration with The Art Students League of New York, and will include additional artwork from the university's significant collection and other lenders.

Since the passage of the G.I. Bill in 1944, more than 4,000 veterans have studied at The Art Students League of New York. Many of those veterans shaped the course of American art. The artists in this exhibition came to The Arts Students league early in their careers and it was a place where they began to develop their personal styles in response to Abstract Expressionism—the major movement at the time in the New York art world. Many studied with Morris Kantor and Yauo Kuniyoshi, who influenced the development of their individual styles coming out of The Art Students League.

Featured artists in the exhibition include Charles Alston, Stanley Boxer, Terence Coyle, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Jack Faragasso, Michael Goldberg, Peter Golfinopoulos, Al Held, John Hultberg, Paul Jenkins, Donald Judd, Alfred Leslie, Knox Martin, Frank O'Cain, Anthony Palumbo, Robert Rauschenberg, and William Scharf.

About the Workshop      

Participants are welcome to work in any medium they wish. One may be a representational painter, non-objective or abstract. The principles of spatial structure, dynamic composition and the science of color are universal. Painting the undulating hills and mountains with its vineyards, olive groves and ancient medieval towns top upon hills will fuel our visions. Tuscany is a rich country with the ghosts of Celtic tribes, Etruscans, Romans, the birth of European painting, and the Great Renaissance. This follows introspection and gives direction to our work as we think with a brush. We will learn to create with the imagination and with courage. The impact of color and its endless rhythms from misty, dream-like to bright complementary statements depending on the sun will bring one’s creative power a place to rule.      Demonstrations, handouts, individual critiques and guidance will be provided. Lectures and discussions on some of the works of art in museums will be provided to help one to visualize and to understand what makes the work successful, or one that is not. A SERIES OF LECTURES MUSEUM LECTURES (Next lecture is saturday may 4th)

A series of lectures organized for the expansion of thought and to help us to find the many  approaches  that each culture creates to bring a space that compels us to move and find the elements with in there life force often this can help us to create a more compelling space in our own struggle to move volumes and organized unified space.

The place we meet is in the very back of the cafe by the leman collection.

Will gather between 12:00pm & 1:15pm and then move on to the galleries.

The search will cover Asia, to the many european to  the american wing in order to look for the creators that took advantage of what we have seen and pursued. 

Bring colored pencils for drawing and anything you can use in the cafe, where we will meet to discuss the on going discoveries.

Frank O’Cain: An Interview

Ira Goldberg: Your educational experience is connected with twentieth-century modernism, coming out of Hans Hoffmann, through Vaclav Vytlacil. You work with nature to derive its essence in studied observation without reflecting specifics on the canvas. Has this approach become outmoded by the advent of instant imagery?

Frank O’Cain: Well, it could be, if it stayed nature. But when I’m done, it’s about energy and form. The whole purpose is to use nature as an extension into another part of your mind. I believe that there’s a base built in its structure that gives you a premise—a place in which to push/pull your colors around. Nature just provides my imagination with a place to absorb. Once that’s done, there are certain things you will pick up, like the gesture of a leaf or the shape or the color of the foliage. As I start removing a literal depiction of it, replacing it with the relationship of the energy that comes through perceiving combinations of texture, movement, and water, I’m removing myself from nature. I’m moving instead into a personalization of the world in general.
